Trends of 2013

Summer 2013- Get ready!

I was talking to a friend who works for a well-known fashion House, and she told me that plans are being finalised for their Summer 2013 women’s clothing collection. I asked her for her views on what was going to be big this Summer, so that we can all plan ahead! Already the biggest fashion houses are showing some of their Spring into Summer collections- but March will, as usual, see the main shows for Summer fashion.

Here’s what I’ve picked up in terms of tips and trends:
Firstly, big bright and bold patterns and colours will be in. Perhaps to cock-a-snoop at the recession, technicolour splashes will be evident on Summer High Streets next year. In fact there’s a definite retro sixties look to some of the colours designs and fabrics. Are we going to see Twiggy, Jane Birkin (remember “Je t’aime Moi Non Plus”?) and Tippi Hedren (Hitchcock’s film The Birds) look-alikes on the catwalk? These styles, such as the mini-skirt and the large print dresses, will be a poptastic perfect tonic to recession blues. And did I mention orange? At a recent show in New York the catwalk was awash with orange- not a pastel shade but a blast from the past orange. Think Bond Bug orange- Space-hopper orange Satsuma orange- a take-no-prisoners orange!

Another phenomenon that looks like it will take hold this coming summer for women’s clothing will be a strange trick; a dress that looks like it’s in two separate parts- but isn’t! The layers around the middle make it look like it’s a good match of skirt and blouse, but it’s all one-piece. Confused? Well the men may be. But it’s a good idea and something genuinely new being paraded.

Another trend seems to be towards the lightest of light fabrics- high-waisted A-line skirts that look floaty and swishy, not bulky at all. Sometimes with two layers, a light top layer and a darker coloured under-layer which produces a lovely shifting colour effect when you’re walking down the avenue, on the boardwalk, or skipping across the sand. These super lightweight fabrics are so nice to see, but also brilliant to wear- you feel swaddled and swathed in the Emperor’s New Clothes- or should that be the Empress’ New Clothes? You’ll love the airy-fairy of these summer dresses when they hit the shops- take my word for it.

Next up is the biker jacket. Yep, I know it was big last year and the year before that, but it seems we can’t get enough of the retro biker jacket style brought up to date. Blouson or short-style, these will be big in both denim or leather, along with the usual paraphernalia of zips, studs and rings.

Finally there’s a big Japanese influence that you’ll see next year. Forget that China is about the only blossoming economy, anime, manga, geisha and sushi are where it’s at. Some of the styles are pretty outrageous, with spice-helmet visors, garish alien make-up, crystal ruffs, silver space boots and beam-me-up Scotty mega-size bracelets. You’ll feel you’re in Tokyo in 2030…and I can’t wait- bring it on for Summer 2013!
